When Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday, those involved in “The Social Network” all had something to celebrate about. The film has been nominated for eight Academy Awards which means it is only behind The King’s Speech (12) and True Grit (10). It shares third place with Inception, who also have eight, for most nominated Oscars. I reckon that’s an achievement within itself.
When the Oscars take place next month, “The Social Network” will be going head-to-head with others in these categories: Best Picture, Best Director (David Fincher), Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg), Best Adapted Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) and Best Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross).
On his second nomination in his career, director Fincher commented, that he was “very grateful and humbled” and very proud of his role towards this film about Facebook’s founding.
However, there is one person who is not singing the film’s praises and that is Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg himself who in the film, is portrayed as a rather “ruthless social climber” who -pretty much created the website to be popular with the ladies. The Hollywood Reporter was told by a Facebook representative, “We’ve said all we’re going to say about the movie and the books … We’ve moved on from this discussion, and we think others have, too.”
Even, so it is said to be heard by actor Eisenberg that Zuckerberg had been heard commenting that he had done a “nice job” of depicting the young billionaire. He admitted to Oprah Winfrey that he had taken some staff to see a movie screening of the film, and told her, “It’s a movie, it’s fun … I can promise you, this is my life so I know it’s not that dramatic. The last six years have been a lot of coding and focus and hard work, but maybe it would be fun to remember it as partying and all this crazy drama.”
